Lee Harvey Oswald apparently was paid for a half-day of work on Nov. 22, 1963

Presidential memorabilia is very popular. Sometimes even forgettable items linked to the most gripping moments in history can command enormous interest.

Such is the case in February 2020, when a December 1963 paycheck issued by the Texas School Book Depository to Mrs. Lee Harvey Oswald was put up for sale at Heritage Auctions.

According to the Heritage description of the item, it was held by Marina Oswald’s lawyer and bequeathed to his widow. According to Heritage, the notation at the left says “4 days, Lee Harvey Oswald for Nov. ’63.” But according to an attached letter of provenance from the lawyer’s widow (above), the first number is “4½,” not “4.”

Indeed, there is clearly a marking to the right of the number 4 that certainly appears to be a “½.”

There seems little question that this was the final paycheck issued to Lee Harvey Oswald, sent to his widow after his death, that his salary at the Texas School Book Depository was roughly $48 a week — and that he was compensated Dec. 3 for a half-day of work on Nov. 22, 1963.
